    August 23rd, 2010SosweetTori Amos

Myra Ellen Amos, better known as Tori Amos, is an American alternative/piano rock singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist.

Born on 22nd August 1963 in Newton, North Carolina and brought up in Baltimore, Maryland, Amos began to learn the piano at the age of three and was composing her own instrumental pieces by the age of five. After studying at the renowned Peabody Conservatory of Music, she soon began performing in local piano bars and, at the age of fourteen, won a county teen talent contest. This led to her releasing her debut single Baltimore with MCA Records in 1980 – along with the B-side Walking With You.

In the late 1980s Amos set up the group Y Kant Tori Read, alongside the guitarist Steve Caton, drummer Matt Sorum, bass player Brad Cobb and keyboardist Jim Tauber. They released one self-titled album along with the single Distant Storm – which was featured on the 1988 film China O’Brien – before splitting up. However, their label Atlantic Records still demanded six albums from the group’s contract, so Amos decided to placate them by releasing a solo album instead.

1992’s Little Earthquakes was a critical hit and also a commercial success, reaching number fourteen in the UK Albums Chart. The singles Winter, Crucify and Silent All These Years all reached the Top 30 in the UK. Her follow up album Under the Pink was even more successful, reached number one in the UK (and number twelve in the US) and producing the UK Top 10 singles Cornflake Girl and Pretty Good Year.

Since then Amos has released a further nine studio albums and scored hits with singles like God, A Sorta Fairytale, Spark, Jackie’s Strength, Professional Widow, Wednesday, Taxi Ride and Welcome To England. She most recently appeared on David Byrne and Fatboy Slim’s 2010 concept album Here Lies Love.

It reached number 27 on the Billboard 200, selling over two million copies in the US alone, and produced the Hot 100 number five hit Name, as well as Hot Modern Rock Tracks chart Top 30 singles Naked, Only One and Long Way Down.

    August 19th, 2010HippyDaft Punk

Daft Punk is a French electronic music group consisting of Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter.

The duo met in 1987 in secondary school and formed the indie rock group Darlin’ together – along with the future Phoenix guitarist Laurent Brancowitz. After releasing a couple of singles and playing a few gigs, they received a scathing review in Melody Maker that dubbed the music “a bunch of daft punk”. After the band disbanded in 1992, Bangalter and de Homem-Christo used the moniker to create a new electronic music group.

In 1993 Daft Punk signed with Soma Quality Recordings and released their debut single The New Wave (later renamed Alive and included on their first album). This was followed by 1995’s Da Funk, which reached the Top 10 in both France and the UK, as well as hitting number one on the US Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart. It also became renowned for its artistic music video directed by the future Academy Award-winner Spike Jonze.

The group released their debut album Homework in January 1997. Combining elements of house music, techno, acid and funk, the record sold over two million copies worldwide within just a few months and, as well as Da Funk, produced the major club hit single Around the World.

The duo followed this success with 2001’s Discovery, which marked a shift in style toward more of a disco/synthpop kind of house music. The album was a huge success, reaching number two in the UK, selling over 2.5 million copies worldwide and producing six singles, including the French chart-topping hit One More Time, the UK Top 20 Digital Love and the Grammy Award-winning Harder Better Faster Stronger.

Daft Punk’s latest album Human After All was released in March 2005 along with the singles Robot Rock, Technologic, Human After All and The Prime Time of Your Life. These and many more Daft Punk ringtones can be downloaded from www.mobijoy.com

Born Florian Cloud de Bounevialle O’Malley Armstrong on 25th December 1971 in Kensington, London, Dido took an interest in music from a young age. By her teens she had learned to play the piano, recorder and violin, and was enrolled in the renowned Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Although she went to university to study law she dropped out soon afterwards, determined to pursue a full-time career in music.

In 1995 she recorded the demo album Odds & Ends, which was sent to a number of record companies. However, she managed to gain more exposure by collaborating with the British electronica band Faithless, which is fronted by her brother Rollo. After writing and providing vocals for album tracks like Flowerstand Man and Hem of His Garment, she was signed to Cheeky/Arista Records and began work on her debut solo studio album.

Although it was a slow-burner, the use of her music on the film Sliding Doors, the television programme Roswell and, most notably, on Eminem’s UK number one hit track Stan (which sampled the song Thank You) soon led to it finding a wider audience. The album eventually reached number one in the UK and number four in the US, with the singles Here With Me, Thank You and Hunter all reaching the UK Top 10 in 2001. The album went on to sell over 21 million copies worldwide and earned the singer Best Album and Best British Female at the 2002 BRIT Awards.

Yellowcard is a pop punk/alternative rock band from Los Angeles, California, currently consisting of Ryan Key on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, Sean Mackin on violin and vocals, Ryan Mendez on lead guitar and vocals and Longineu W. Parsons III on drums and percussion.

Formed in 1997 in Jacksonville, Florida, the group released their debut album Midget Tossing with independent label DIY Records in April that year. They then signed to Takeover Records and released their second album Where We Stand in 1999 (later re-released in 2004 and 2005). This was followed by the group’s first EP Still Standing in 2000, then their third album One for the Kids the following year. It was their biggest hit to date, with the songs Cigarette and Drifting appearing on a number of television shows and computer games. This was then followed by their second EP release The Underdog EP.

However, it was their fourth studio album Ocean Avenue, recorded after signing to the major label Capitol Records, that would prove to be the group’s breakthrough mainstream success. It was their first album to chart inside the Billboard 200 and eventually climbed to a peak of number 25. The album would go on to sell over a million copies and produce the US Top 30 hit single Ocean Avenue.

The group’s next release Lights and Sounds showcased more of an alternative rock sound – a departure from their previous pop punk staple. It subsequently reached number five on the Billboard 200, selling over 80,000 copies in its first week of release, and spawned two singles: Lights and Sounds and Rough Landing, Holly. This was followed by 2007’s Paper Walls, which hit number thirteen in the US and produced the hit single Light Up the Sky… but this was to be the group’s last release for the foreseeable future as they announced an indefinite hiatus in April 2008.
