Dido is a British pop singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from London, England.

Born Florian Cloud de Bounevialle O’Malley Armstrong on 25th December 1971 in Kensington, London, Dido took an interest in music from a young age. By her teens she had learned to play the piano, recorder and violin, and was enrolled in the renowned Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Although she went to university to study law she dropped out soon afterwards, determined to pursue a full-time career in music.

In 1995 she recorded the demo album Odds & Ends, which was sent to a number of record companies. However, she managed to gain more exposure by collaborating with the British electronica band Faithless, which is fronted by her brother Rollo. After writing and providing vocals for album tracks like Flowerstand Man and Hem of His Garment, she was signed to Cheeky/Arista Records and began work on her debut solo studio album.

No Angels was released in 1999. Although it was a slow-burner, the use of her music on the film Sliding Doors, the television programme Roswell and, most notably, on Eminem’s UK number one hit track Stan (which sampled the song Thank You) soon led to it finding a wider audience. The album eventually reached number one in the UK and number four in the US, with the singles Here With Me, Thank You and Hunter all reaching the UK Top 10 in 2001. The album went on to sell over 21 million copies worldwide and earned the singer Best Album and Best British Female at the 2002 BRIT Awards.

Dido’s second studio album Life for Rent reached number one in the UK and number five in the US, producing the UK Top 10 singles White Flag and Life for Rent, as well as the Top 30 hits Don’t Leave Home and Sand in My Shoes. Her third album Safe Trip Home was released in November 2008.
