Nelly Furtado is a Portuguese-Canadian singer-songwriter and record producer who has sold over twenty million albums worldwide.

Born on 2nd December 1978, Furtado began playing musical instruments at the age of nine, learning the saxophone, cello, guitar and keyboard. She began writing music at the age of twelve and spent much of her teenage years performing in a Portuguese marching band. In 1999 she signed a record deal with DreamWorks Records and produced the track Party’s Just Begun (Again) for the Hollywood film Brokedown Palace.

Just over a year later, Furtado shot to international fame with the release of her critically acclaimed debut album Whoa, Nelly! It produced three smash hit singles – I’m Like a Bird, Turn off the Light and …On the Radio (Remember the Days) – and has sold over six million copies to date. It also received an impressive four Grammy Award nominations, winning one for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance (I’m Like a Bird).

Nelly Furtado’s second album, Folklore, sold three million copies worldwide and produced the singles Powerless (Say What You Want), Try, Força, Explode and The Grass is Green. This was followed by 2006’s Loose, which was a critical and commercial smash hit. Featuring Furtado’s first US number one singles Promiscuous and Say It Right – both of which also won Grammy Awards – as well as the hits Maneater and All Good Things (Come to an End), the album sold over ten million copies worldwide in 2006, making it the bestselling record of the year.

Furtado released her first Spanish-language album Mi Plan in September 2009, with the single releases Manos al Aire, Más and Bajo Otra Luz, and she is currently touring Latin America with her new material. She confirmed that her next project is an English-language album called Lifestyle, but no release date has been announced as of yet.
