August 8th, 2010EnyaEithne Patricia Ní Bhraonáin, better known as Enya, is an Irish singer-songwriter and instrumentalist.
Born 17th May 1961 in Gweedore, County Donegal, Enya grew up in a musical household. Her father was the leader of the Slieve Foy Band and her mother played in a dance band and was a local music teacher. She started singing with her siblings in the local church choir from a young age and soon learned to play the classical piano. She set up the group An Clann As Dobhar (which later became known as Clannad) with her sister Máire (Moya), her brothers Pól and Ciarán and her uncles Noel and Pádraig, and appeared on the group’s first two albums – 1980’s Crann Úll and 1981’s Fuaim. However, she left shortly before they hit the big time with their UK Top 5 single Theme From Harry’s Game.
Enya’s career, though, was just beginning. She first became known as a solo artist after contributing the songs The Frog Prince and Dreams to the soundtrack to the 1984 film The Frog Prince. After a cameo appearance on Sinéad O’Connor’s debut album The Lion and the Cobra, she released her debut 1987 album Enya. Although it was not a great commercial success the single Boadicea has since appeared on two hit US singles – The Fugees’ Ready or Not (1996) and Mario Winans’ I Don’t Want to Know (2004). By contrast, the singer’s second album Watermark was a big hit, reaching number five in the UK, selling over a million copies worldwide and spawning the UK number one single Orinoco Flow (Sail Away).
Since the beginning of the 1990s, Enya has released a further six studio albums and scored UK Top 40 hits with the singles Caribbean Blue, How Can I Keep From Singing?, Book of Days, The Celts, Anywhere Is, On My Way Home and Only Time – which was also a US Top 10 hit.
